Welcome To DADLAND

Hey there! I’m Toby B. Hemingway, a Melbourne-born/Los Angeles-based writer, musician and sometimes illustrator. The London Sunday Times once accused me of writing “Haunting lyrical imagery”. Things are a little lighter here.

My original Substack, TBH, is where I write about almost everything. DADLAND is a more focussed project, about life as it is right now: A series of field notes from the strange and funny world of modern-day fatherhood.

No tips, no expertise. Just honest and relatable stories about how being a parent intersects with culture, and so persistently reshapes our own identity.

How being the “stay-at-home” one feels. Especially as a dad. When it’s good, when it’s bad, and when you can’t even tell the difference.

These are stories of Gen X and Millennials being crushed between the deafening and indifferent dual forces of Boomers and iPad kids.

Here goes. Don’t hold my beer — I hold my beer.
